X 4 PCI Express to SFF-8643 U.2 Adapter Card for PCIe NVMe SSD, what is new for NVMe interface?

NVMe is NVM Express or Non-Valatile Memory Host Controller Interface Specification. It is based on PCI Express ( PCIe ) Bus for interface. Using PCI Express for interface, that it can keep update with PCI Express update, for next will be PCI Express 4.0, the NVMe can go for more high speed, without changing connector. It is easy and best way for NVMe into the marketing.

How the transfer rate for x 4 PCI Express to SFF-8643 Adapter for PCIe NVMe U.2 SSD Card. NMVe supports PCI Express Gen 3 x 4 lane, the transfer rate is 8Gbps * 4 Lane = 32Gbps transfer rate. SFF-8643, it is name of connector for Host port side. It will be on Mother board for Addon Card, it will be have PCI Express or M.2 M Key Card to support SFF-8643 connector to connect with U.2 HDD.

What is U.2 SSD?

U.2 is NVMe HDD’s name. In the marketing, it has 2.5” U.2 HDD with Intel 750 or SAMSUNG or OCA or other,…. In marketing, it also have U.2 to NMVe PCIe SSD HDD Adapter for 1 slot or 2 slot. It allows users to add storage size by they own. I think it is easy for user to add or change the storage. It is kind of good idea. Shentek has this type of item too 55014 2.5” U.2 NVMe SSD HDD Adapter Hardwar Raid 0/1 2.5” allows add 2 slot SATA SSD B Key M.2, the transfer rate up to 10Gbps. Shentek designs with Hardware Raid 0/1. So far does not have any product as same function with 55014. But 55014 has only support bandwidth for 10Gbps, and it supports with SATA SSD B key M.2 not PCIe SSD M key M.2. other different is cost, 55014 is cost effect item. By the way U.2 HDD uses SFF-8639 connector not SFF-8643.

Why Host port uses SFF-8643 and HDD side uses SFF-8639 connector?

Yes, it is different, I guess is because want to save more space for Mother Board. If M/B uses SFF-8639, it needs more PCB space. And it also has power in design issue. Therefore, when you use x 4 PCI Express to SFF-8643 Adapter Card to 2.5” U.2 HDD, it needs one cable one side is SFF-8643 male and other side is SFF-8639 male. The cable supports with 32Gbps transfer rate.

What is M key M.2 VS NVMe?

NVMe is a big name, but for PCIe, U.2, M.2 all are under NVMe. For x 4 PCI Express to SFF-8643 Adapter for PCIe NVMe U.2 SSD Card. What is storage size for U.2 HDD Adapter or HDD? Intel U.2 HDD 750, it has been build in storage size it would be 480Gbps or higher, also OCZ or Samsung or other too. But it has U.2 Adapter HDD, it allows you to add SSD into HDD Adapter, that you can choice SSD size you want. The SSD supports M key or B key M.2. What different between M key and B key M.2 SSD?

M key SSD is PCIe base SSD also supports NVMe too. B key SSD is SATA base SSD, it is not belong NVMe. It is SATA. But SATA SSD has low price then M key M.2 SSD. Before I say we have 55014 it supports with NVMe with SATA SSD, yes, we have use controller to change from SATA SSD to NVMe transfer.

 

X 4 PCI Express to SFF-8643 Adapter PCIe NVMe U.2 SSD will be hot in marketing?

Yes, it should be, and It would be only two choice for SSD base interface, one is SATA one is NVMe. SATA interface has been stop to updating. SATA has next step is SATA Express, it is between SATA and NVMe, but it is not hot in marketing. The reason is no HDD in marketing. But it has few HDD Adapter for SATA Express ( SATAe ), shentek has this item too 55013 2.5” SATA Express ( SATAe ) HDD Adapter supports Hardware Raid 0/1. Let us go back to NVMe, it designs with PCI Express ( PCIe ), when PCI Express spec update, the NVMe can be update too. It just need to follow up PCI Express does not need to create a new spec. That is why NVMe will go keep in marketing. But now we need to take care the PCIe SSD price vs SATA SSD price. Because of price, most of users still keep with SATA SSD. One day the PCIe SSD price go down, then it will be hot product in marketing.

 

Can NVMe supports with 4 x PCI Express to SFF-8643 Adapter for NVMe U.2 PCIe SSD Card, it can also support with M.2 Card?

 

Yes, it can support M Key M.2 Card, shentek has this item, but we are not finish design yet, but it has some product in marketing too.

Why it can support with M Key M.2 or B Key M.2?

 

 

M Key M.2 supports for 4 x PCI Express bandwidth for 32Gbps, but B Key M.2 only supports for 2 x PCI Express bandwidth for 16Gbps. That is why the transfer rate different. If you want to use with B key, it would be working, only speed is half.
